The San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission (Rec. and Park) and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board (SFMTA) recently announced a special public hearing to discuss a “proposed pilot” on the Great Highway.
On Sunday, April 17, a coalition of labor, faith, and community organizations and Supervisor Gordon Mar brought together hundreds of people in the Sunset District for a peaceful rally and march along the car-free Upper Great Highway in a powerful demonstration against hate and violence targeting the AAPI communities.
The Great Highway is “perfectly fine” in the same way the hideous Embarcadero Freeway was “perfectly fine” before it was demolished following the Loma Prieta earthquake.
Could the district please re-consider permanently closing the UGH? I walked along it when it was closed to cars and found it was like walking in a parking lot …
No “solutions” are needed if the Highway is simply returned to its pre-pandemic use, which worked wonderfully for all and didn’t lead to any problems!
The District 4 Mobility Study was passed with funding from Proposition K by the SFCTA and Board of Supervisors for $500,000 to study a number of streets in District 4, including the Upper Great Highway closure and many other safety improvements on streets connected to the Upper Great Highway.
End the traffic and gridlock in the outer avenues! Closure of the Upper Great Highway has made a mess of the neighborhood. Now that construction on 19th Avenue is taking place, things are even worse!
For at least the 31 years I have lived in the Sunset District, the UGH, bordered, on either side by parallel pedestrian/biking paths, has effectively and safely served its function of providing a (quite scenic!) route of access between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way, without complaint and to everybody’s satisfaction.
Nearly $500,000 was allocated in February by San Francisco supervisors, acting as the county’s regional transportation authority, for the Great Highway Outer Sunset Traffic Management Project.

The meeting ostensibly was for SFCTA to present and discuss various possibilities for the Upper Great Highway’s future, but it was the most biased, agenda-driven presentation I have ever witnessed, and it quickly became clear that from SFCTA’s perspective – the permanent closure option – is fete accompli.
