This photograph, circa 1907, shows Sweeney’s observatory on the top of Strawberry Hill in Golden Gate Park after it was destroyed by the massive earthquake that hit the City in April, 1906. The observatory was constructed as a part of the 1894 Mid-winter Exposition that was held in the park. Strawberry Hill, located in the middle of Stow Lake, is the tallest point in the park.
This photograph, circa 1900, shows four children standing in the Music Concourse located in front of the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in Golden Gate Park. The museum and the surrounding area was developed for the 1894 Mid-winter Fair.
An arrest related to several arson fires in Golden Gate Park has been made, although as of press time charges tied directly to those fires have not been filed. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
The City’s contract with the Outside Lands Art and Music Festival expires in 2021, but an extension of that contract is going before the SF Recreation and Park Commission on Jan. 17. If approved, it then goes to the SF Board of Supervisors (BOS).
