New housing at the Alexandria Theatre is being considered by the property owner, but with conditions that do not satisfy District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan, who is trying to secure landmark status for the iconic Richmond District building.
On Tuesday, District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan introduced legislation to landmark the Alexandria Theatre’s historical resources. The Alexandria Theatre was built in 1923, closed its doors in 2004 and has remained vacant ever since.
Whatever historic value is probably long gone and it’s time for it to go.
The blade sign on the venerable Alexandria Theatre – a fixture on Geary Boulevard and 18th Avenue for nearly a century – was damaged to the point that the property owners had to have it taken down.
