Editor:
My late mom suffered for four years before being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, which was too late for her to have input on her care. Therefore, access to treatments that can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s is important to me. I am stunned that Medicare is refusing to cover an FDA-approved treatment that has been shown to slow the progression of this devastating disease. People deserve more time to be with their loved ones and participate in daily life. Even the VA has said it will cover the new Alzheimer’s drug Lecanemab. Plus more treatments are in the pipeline
Every other FDA-approved drug is covered by Medicare, except for Alzheimer’s. This CMS’s policy is unfair and discriminatory. All people living with Alzheimer’s deserve better. If Medicare thinks that having more quality time with an incurable illness isn’t reasonable or necessary, why does it cover every other FDA-approved treatment for every other fatal disease? Please join me in urging Congresswoman Pelosi to demand CMS take action to ensure people living with Alzheimer’s have the same access as other people with incurable diseases do.
