Then and Now

‘Then and Now’: Irving Street and Ninth Avenue

Above: The view looking southeast on Irving Street near Ninth Avenue, circa 1915, shows the Irish Tavern on the corner, Laguna Honda School and future UCSF in distance. The house in the center later moved to Funston Avenue. Notice there is only one car on the street. Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project/OpenSFHistory.

Below: The same view 108 years later shows how built up the neighborhood is – especially UCSF – and how the street looks without telephone poles and wires, but lots of cars. Photo by Michael Durand.

  1. Thanks for the picture. My Mom lived next to Laguna Honda School about 1913/14 before they moved to Los Angeles.
