Press Release: SF Model Yacht Club Sets Sail for 2023 Season

From the SF Model Yacht Club:

March 11 is Opening Day of the 2023 model boating season at Spreckels Lake (36th Avenue and Fulton Street) in Golden Gate Park. This event includes the Ragtop/Stinkpot Relay Regatta, a friendly relay competition that cleverly includes skippers and boats from the Power Squadron, R/C Sail Squadron and Freesail Squadron. The Opening Day regatta will begin about 1 p.m. on the south side of Spreckels Lake.

The San Francisco Model Yacht Club (SFMYC) plans to offer a full schedule of model boating activities between March and the end of October. The SFMYC arranges and conducts model sailing and power boating events on Spreckels Lake on local, national and international levels. The Club meets to discuss business and share information on the second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m. in the clubhouse located at 36th Avenue and JFK Drive.

All SFMYC events are at Spreckels Lake and are subject to change. Informal power boating generally takes place starting at 9:30 a.m. every Sunday. Sail regattas (radio-control and freesail) take place most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays in the afternoon. A complete listing of all SFMYC events is found on the club website,

The San Francisco Model Yacht Club was formed in 1898 and has been continuously active ever since. To promote the sport of model boating and provide a recreational facility for members and non-members alike, the SFMYC in 1902 made a request for construction of Spreckels Lake.  The Lake was completed in 1904.  Now spanning three centuries, the Club has exercised a responsible custodial stewardship of Spreckels Lake shared with the Recreation and Park Department to the benefit of the City and County of San Francisco, its citizens and thousands of visitors.

The SFMYC clubhouse is located near the west shore of Spreckels Lake, across John F. Kennedy Drive from the Polo Field and east of the Bison Paddock. The building was constructed as a project of the Works Progress Administration in 1937.
