Hundreds of people came out on Sunday March 11 to support a permanently car-free JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park.
On Sunday, March 11, more than 200 people rallied at the Music Concourse to keep JFK Drive closed to motor vehicle traffic. The SF Parks Alliance reports that Golden Gate Park visitors increased 600% in 2020.
David Miles, founder of the Church of 8 Wheels and the “Godfather of Skate,” spoke to the crowd about his 42-year fight to keep JFK Drive open to people. “It’s kinda a selfish thing,” he said. “I just want to come out to the park and have a great time, every time I come out. I want to have fun with my friends and I want to have fun with my family. I want to share that same fantastic energy that I discovered when I first found out that this road was closed to traffic.”
California Assemblymember David Chiu spoke to the crowd at the rally, arguing that without car-free JFK he would not feel safe visiting with his son Lucas from their Bayview home.

Children’s book author Marta Lindsey attended the rally in front of the California Academy of Sciences with her daughter Elise.
Fennel Doyle, who regularly bikes to Golden Gate Park from the Western Addition with her daughter, came out to support a car-free JFK Drive. “It should’ve been car-free long ago,” she said. “It has been too unsafe for too long.”
