Public Citizen and MoveOn.org Plan a Socially Distanced Action in San Francisco on Sunday, April 4 as Part of Nationwide Push to Call on the U.S. Senate to Pass Transformative Democracy Legislation
Activists to Hold a Streets of San Francisco Sidewalk engagement & banner art creation During the First-Ever “For the People Week of Action,” Urging Passage of the “For the People Act”
WHAT: On April 4, during the Congressional recess, Bay Area citizens will hold an outdoor event, complete with banners and visuals, calling on the U.S. Senate, including California Senators Feinstein and Padilla, to pass the For the People Act and transform our democracy into one that is truly of, by and for the people. The action is one of over 100 (and counting!) nationwide to urge Congress to immediately pass the For the People Act, which passed the House of Representatives on March 3, and was recently introduced in the U.S. Senate as S. 1.
We will be engaging our neighbors at the Clement Street Farmers Market, asking them why Democracy is important to them and asking them to contribute to an art project right there on the street, demanding Democracy.
The need to transform our political systems is more urgent now than ever as states have introduced over 250 bills to restrict or limit voting access since the 2020 elections, and as corporations and wealthy interests pay top dollar to influence elections and drown out the voices of everyday voters. The For the People Act is a landmark bill that will expand and protect the freedom to vote, end partisan and racial gerrymandering, get dark money out of politics, and restore transparency and accountability in our government. With pro-reformers controlling the House, the Senate, and the White House, we have an opportunity to transform our political system into one that realizes the true promise of American democracy. But this transformative change can only happen if the For the People Act passes the U.S. Senate.
Photos from the action will be available here.
