It is an amazement that the prior name of San Francisco was Yerba Wanja (sp), where San Francisco is a Spanish name, like the many Spanish Missions and names of cities and streets are in California. Also astonishing is that the SFUSD committee members would want to change 39 school names from US Presidents and American heroes to non-white supremacists, etc. .
As a sixth generation San Franciscan, I attended Farragut, Parkside and West Portal grammar schools, Aptos Junior High School and Polytechnic High School. Upon graduation the very next Monday morning, I was hired in Engineering by PG&E for a 55-year career. It was a time when all my fellow schools – with the exception of Poly High – consisted of white students and teachers who spoke fluent English. We recited the pledge of allegiance to the American Flag in the classroom every morning
I cringe to think in my 85th year what names the committee will attach to these schools that have been attended by my father, sister, wife, three daughters and four of my grandsons. It was at the age of 11 at Aptos Junior High School where I met my wife-to-be. I told her when I learned her name, that someday we would me married. We have been married for 63 years.
What will be next when all the murals and statues are gone and all the streets, neighborhoods and cities are renamed and the flags are changed ?
