Historical Photo – Sutro’s

History photo Sutros RR 7-20

A main attraction of the Richmond District since it opened in 1896, the Sutro Baths was already in decline when this Kodachrome slide was taken circa 1957. It had been purchased from the Sutro family by George Whitney, owner of nearby Playland-at-the-Beach, in 1952. Whitney tried to revitalize the iconic baths by removing all swimming activities and giving the exterior a mid-century remodel seen here. Unfortunately, Sutro’s wouldn’t make it and would close for good in 1966. Soon after, the building burned down. (Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project/OpenSFHistory.)
