Adjusting to Our New Normal
By Mayor London N. Breed
San Francisco has come together in an incredible way to slow the spread of COVID-19 in San Francisco, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made. I know we’re all looking forward to the time when we can visit with friends and family, go out to a restaurant, get a haircut, or just run errands like we used to.
But until we have a vaccine for COVID-19, we are going to have to continue practicing social distancing, covering our faces when we go out, and keeping up good hygiene habits like frequent handwashing. Each of us needs to take these simple steps every day to do our part to continue to limit the spread of the disease and to keep our community healthy.
Over the coming weeks and months, there will be additional adjustments to the Stay Home Health Order that will allow us to regain some sense of normalcy. Recently, the City has allowed some businesses to reopen with modifications and is allowing some activities to resume. This is good news for our businesses and their employees, who we know who have been struggling.
If we want our City to recover from this pandemic and emerge stronger, it starts with each one of us dedicating ourselves to shopping locally for everything we can. Buy your books from the store down the street. Go to the local hardware store and pick up dinner from the restaurant down the street. Each purchase will help our small businesses survive this challenging time.
As we stay at least six feet apart from others and cover our faces when we go out, we can still find ways of connecting with our neighbors and loved ones. There are also various volunteer opportunities available to help fellow San Franciscans who need assistance with food or other essential needs. (Learn more here: sf.gov/be-emergency-volunteer).
San Franciscans have made a lot of sacrifices to get us where we are today, so any changes we make will be done safely so we don’t slide back and are forced to shut down again. San Francisco has been a national leader in confronting this pandemic, and I know we can do the same in reopening our economy safely.
