Hockey Haven: 3625 Balboa Street
Nominated by Supervisor Sandra Lee Fewer
Hockey Haven is a neighborhood sports bar established in 1949 by Rene Trudell, a French Canadian professional hockey player. Tucked behind a simple facade is a bar that has preserved its charm and character despite the rapidly changing city and streetscape.
Devoted customers come for the drinks, the classic Monday Night Steak Dinner, the nostalgic jukebox and community events such as birthdays, community meetings and gatherings.
Current owner Erin Massey worked at the bar for 18 years before purchasing the business from the previous owners. Hockey Haven has operated in its Outer Richmond location since its founding.
“The Hockey Haven is honored to have the great City of San Francisco award us as a Legacy Business,” said Erin Massey, owner of Hockey Haven. “Our bar motto is ‘Keepin’ It Local Since 1949’— traditions and relationships are the heart and soul of our business. Old school San Francisco is alive and well at our establishment. Let’s ring that bell and celebrate this unique honor! Cheers to the neighborhood, the City and all who enjoy our neighborhood bar.”
The Legacy Business Registry recognizes longstanding, community-serving businesses as valuable cultural assets to the city. There are over 180 businesses on the Legacy Business Registry.
