Playland at the Beach, located between Balboa and Fulton streets at Ocean Beach, featured a fun house, rides, carnival games and the famous “It’s It” cookie ice cream sandwiches. The Whitney brothers consolidated shooting galleries, food kiosks and a carousel to create the oceanside amusement zone in the 1922. Attractions such as the Big Dipper wooden roller coaster, the Shoot the Chutes water ride and the Ferris Wheel—shown in the circa-1930 photo above—drew generations of San Franciscans. Playland was demolished in 1972 to make way for condos. Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project.
