More than 400 veterans spend day mingling with animals
The SF Zoo and Gardens opened its 100-acre classroom, conservation center and park to more than 420 invited veterans and caretakers on Sept. 14. The visiting veterans are V.A. Palo Alto Health Care System patients and traveled from all over Northern California for the event.
“I like just getting outside, checking out the animals and being in this atmosphere,” said 68year-old Manny Lopez, a veteran of the Vietnam War.
He and many others ventured into the Wells Fargo Wildlife Theatre for encounters with education animals, including a ferret, iguana and snake. The Zoo’s oldest animal resident, a 77year-old desert tortoise, outranked some of the veterans in age.
Now in its fifth consecutive year, the partnership between SF Zoo, VA Palo Alto Health Care System and VFW Post 4103 is a popular event for all involved.
The event was the brainchild of former SF Zoo veterinary technician Ron Martorana, who is a veteran himself and volunteers with VFW Post 4103. In five years, the event has grown from about 100 participants to more than 400.
