An East Bay man has been convicted of killing a Richmond District woman in 1991 after investigators connected evidence at the scene of the crime with a suspect being released from prison after serving a 17-year term on burglary charges.
Prison officials got a DNA sample from 61-year-old Otis Hughes as he was leaving the prison. A check with the state’s database yielded a hit on the long-unsolved case.
Karen Wong, 38, was killed in her apartment in the 400 block of 47th Avenue in February 1991. Her boyfriend and brother discovered her body after not hearing from her for several days.
Hughes was convicted by a jury after a six-week trial and is expected to be sentenced on Feb. 9. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
